   The museum has been operating since 1967. At that time, it was located in the building of the Haji Myalik Mosque located in the center of Turkmenabad. Its new building was opened with the blessing of esteemed Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. September 15th, 2011.
   Simultaneous interpretation equipment is installed in the museum sections. The Independence section shows information related to the political life of the region, photographs, recordings, various values and scientific information about them. The vaults contain more than 20 thousand exhibits. The museum also features paintings, ceramics, and sculptures by local artists, as well as historical documents related to the region.
The ethnography section demonstrates the material and cultural values associated with the ancient way of life of the people. The exhibition features showcases highlighting agriculture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, weaving and an Oriental Bazaar located on the route that existed for thousands of years of the Great Silk Road. The museum's visitors are very interested in jewelry, carpets, copper, clay and wooden dishes, national clothes made of keteni fabric, beautiful patterns on it, women's capes, musical instruments, and tools.
   The nature section reveals the features of the flora and fauna of the Retepek, Amu Darya and Koytendag reserves of the Lebap region. A special exhibit of the museum is a 150 million-year-old stone footprint of a dinosaur taken from the village of Hojapil.
   The archeology section provides interesting information about the city of Amul, the mausoleums of Astanababa, Alamberdar, Idrisbaba madrasah, Dayhatun caravanserai, Dargangala monument and shows ceramic products, clay female figurines, ivory and huma remains, which allow us to look into the distant past of the region.
